This 7″ calabash-style bowl is turned from a highly figured piece of black walnut taken from the crotch of a black walnut tree. The unusual growth created dense, feathered grain along with a collection of natural cracks and voids throughout the piece. Rather than hiding them, each opening is filled with brass using a kintsugi-inspired technique, making the imperfections part of the bowl’s character. The simple calabash form keeps the focus on the contrast between the dark walnut, shifting figure, and bright brass repairs. Turned, repaired, and finished by hand, the bowl preserves the marks of how the tree grew rather than trying to erase them.
