The Burn Below

Part of the Untitled Unmastered series, The Burn Below explores what remains after destruction. Made of locally sourced ash wood harvested in Salt Lake City, the piece underwent the Japanese shou sugi ban process in which the outer grain is burned away to expose the hidden heartwood beneath.

The result is a surface suspended between erosion and revelation. Charred and dark at its edges while the exposed core of heartwood which glows with texture and depth. At 17 inches in diameter, the bowl carries the weight of something excavated rather than made. A study in contrast between violence and preservation, combustion and memory. 

This bowl is sealed against anymore erosion with multiple layers of Danish oil. These are not kept in stock and are made to order.
