This 10″ bowl is turned from California black walnut, cut from the crotch of the tree where two limbs once grew apart. That intersection created a dramatic feathered grain that moves across the center of the bowl and makes the piece feel almost symmetrical. The rich browns and darker streaks of the black walnut shift throughout the form, revealing more detail as the light moves across it. The shape is kept simple to let the unusual grain and natural character of the wood remain the focus. Turned, sanded, and finished by hand, this bowl preserves a part of the tree that could only have formed through years of growth.
