Duality.

Duality is a bowl turned from Salt Lake City ash that explores the tension between opposing forces living within the same form. The interior was finished using the Japanese technique of shou sugi ban, where fire transforms the surface into a deep black texture filled with movement and shadow. In contrast, the exterior was carefully sanded to a soft glow, preserving the natural brightness and warmth of the ash beneath the hand.

The piece exists between destruction and refinement, darkness and light, aggression and calm. One side carries the evidence of fire while the other remains smooth and untouched, yet both belong to the same tree and the same object. That relationship is what drives the piece. Duality is about the reality that opposing forces are not always in conflict. Sometimes they rely on one another to fully exist. The bowl asks the viewer to consider how softness can exist beside intensity, and how beauty often comes from the balance between the two.
