The Butterfly

Turned from Norway maple and measuring 18 inches in diameter, The Butterfly is shaped while the wood was still green, allowing it to move, thin, and settle into its final form. The walls are turned to a point where light passes through the surface, giving the piece a soft translucency that shifts with its surroundings.

The maple carries a pale, natural tone, with subtle variation that becomes more visible when illuminated. The thinness of the form creates a sense of delicacy, but the piece holds its structure, balancing fragility with control.

Soaked for 20 days in Danish oil and sanded to a smooth, refined finish, The Butterfly has a quiet, tactile quality. It feels light, almost weightless, a piece defined by transformation, where material, process, and time all remain visible.
