Ember

Ember is a small, grounded object that carries a quiet weight. Turned from a 5 inch piece of cedar and finished using the shou sugi ban process, its surface is charred, brushed, and sealed, leaving behind a deep, textured black that still holds the memory of flame. The grain emerges through the burn like something uncovered rather than created.

As part of the Mortal Man series, Ember reflects on the idea that even in destruction there is preservation. The fire that blackens the wood does not erase it, it transforms it, fixing a moment of intensity into permanence. In that way, the bowl becomes a container not just in function, but in meaning. It holds the tension between fragility and endurance, between what is lost and what remains.

At its scale, it invites a closer interaction. It is something to pick up, to turn in your hands, to notice the subtle shifts in texture and light across its surface.
