Two Sides is a 17″ bowl turned from ash, with a deeply charred Shou Sugi Ban exterior surrounding a natural wood interior. Burning the outside opens and darkens the grain, creating a textured black surface while leaving the pale character of the ash untouched within. The contrast reveals two completely different expressions of the same piece of wood, one transformed by fire and the other left in its natural state. Its simple form keeps the focus on the transition between the burned exterior and the untouched interior. Turned, burned, and finished by hand, Two Sides is a study in contrast and how a single material can carry two identities at once.
